Naguib Mahfouz – Children of Gebelawi – First Edition 1967

An exceptionally rare first edition of this long-banned novel by the Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz, also known as Children of the Alley.

First appearing in serialised form in September 1959 in the Egyptian newspaper Al Ahram, the book was subsequently banned from publication in Egypt due to opposition from the religious establishment.

The novel is set in a 19th-century Cairene alley, and depicts the early history of the three monotheistic faiths (Islam, Christianity and Judaism) and their protagonists.

It first appeared in a single volume in 1967, published in Beirut by Al Adab Publishing house, whose founder Suhail Idris took on the responsibility of issuing the title.

Controversy surrounding the title ultimately led to an assassination attempt on Mahfouz in 1994, when he was stabbed outside his Cairo home by several extremists.

The novel continued to be banned in Egypt until the author’s death in 2006, after which it became a bestseller.

This is a first printing of the 1967 Beirut edition. Softback, in good condition. Some creasing and scuffing to covers and spine. Neat previous owner’s inscription dated 1967, otherwise clean and bright inside.

الرواية المحرمة هي شهرة رواية نجيب محفوظ العظيمة “أولاد حارتنا”.

صدرت الرواية لأول مرة على شكل حلقات منفصلة في جريدة الاهرام المصرية في سبتمبر 1959,

لتبدأ بعدها رحلة منع الرواية من الصدور في مصر.

حُرم نجيب محفوظ من رؤية روايته مطبوعة في مصر ككل رواياته، وذلك بسبب المنع الذي مارسته

السلطة الدينية والذي أدى في نهاية المطاف إلى محاولة اغتيال بسبب هذه الرواية في عام 1994.

بعد منع إصدار الرواية في مصر تكفل الأديب سهيل إدريس مؤسس دار الآداب البيروتية

بإصدار الرواية بطبعتها الأولى ككتاب في عام 1967.

الرواية التي بين أيدينا الآن هي الطبعة الأولى النادرة جدا استمرت عملية البحث عشرة سنوات.

الطبعة في حالة جيدة جدا نظرا لعمرها، يظهر على الغلاف تجاعيد واحتكاك عند الحواف.
