Hamad Abu Shihab – Diwan Al Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum – 1989 First Edition

A very rare first edition of this collection of verse written by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai, published in 1989.

Compiled and edited by the renowned Emirati poet and researcher Hamad Khalifa Abu Shihab, it includes a wide array of poems by Sheikh Mohammed, plus a distinctive series of exchanges with other writers. It presents Sheikh Mohammed’s verse as a dialogue with other Gulf poets who participated in the exchanges.

Abu Shihab, who passed away in 2019, played a pioneering role in documenting and preserving Nabati poetry in the UAE. He hosted the first local television show dedicated to the form, and was among the first to publish verse in daily newspapers.

The poems are written in the traditional Nabati style of verse from the Arabian Peninsula, which was traditionally composed in local colloquial dialects rather than formal Arabic. Common themes include heritage, landscapes, love, tribal affairs, social and family life, and local history.

This is thought to be the first appearance of Sheikh Mohammed’s work in book form, with his poems having previously been published in newspapers in Dubai under several different pseudonyms.  This first 1989 printing was followed by a second in 1992, and then a third in 1993.

Sheikh Mohammed has since published many other collections of poetry, notably Poems from the Desert in 2009, which have all been translated into multiple different languages.

The first edition was published in a special deluxe format, with embossed suede boards and colour printing throughout in the colours of the UAE flag. The dust jacket shows a picture of a falcon.

يضم الديوان مجموعة واسعة من قصائد الشيخ محمد بن راشد آل مكتوم. ومن أبرز ما يميزه توثيقه للمساجلات الشعرية؛ إذ يورد قصائد الشيخ محمد إلى جانب قصائد الشعراء الذين شاركوه تلك المساجلات والردود المتبادلة بينهم، محافظًا على سياق القصائد والحوار الشعري الذي نشأت ضمنه.

يمنح هذا الجانب الديوان قيمة توثيقية خاصة، فهو يحفظ جانبًا من حركة الشعر النبطي وعلاقات شعرائه في الإمارات والخليج خلال تلك المرحلة.

صدر الديوان في طبعة فاخرة، تتميز بجودة الورق والطباعة الملونة والزخارف التي تحيط بصفحاته.

وتكتسب هذه النسخة أهمية إضافية من تاريخها الطباعي؛ فقد أعيد إصدار الديوان لاحقًا في طبعات منقحة ومزيدة، وتوثق المصادر الببليوغرافية إصدار عام 1992 بوصفه الطبعة الثانية، ثم صدرت الطبعة الثالثة عام 1993.

نسخة نادرة من الطبعة الأولى، مطبوعة في دبي قبل أكثر من خمسة وثلاثين عامًا.
