W.B. Yeats – Poems – 1904

A superb example of this collection of verse by the Irish poet and dramatist William Butler Yeats (1865-1939), which was first published in 1889.

This is the fourth printing, from 1904, bound in a beautiful decorative cloth with Celtic gilt designs by illustrator Althea Gyles.

With an inscription by Mona Gough, dated 1907 at Lough Cutra Castle. This was a large estate in Galway owned by the Gough family, which purchased the site in the 1850s and undertook significant extension and renovation works. Yeats frequently stayed there, often with his collaborator Lady Augusta Gregory, were both co-founders of the Irish Literary Theatre and the Abbey Theatre. Gregory resided at the nearby Coole Park, which was an important hub for many contemporary writers and artists.

Yeats was a major figure in early 20th-century literature and also played a prominent role in Irish politics, serving two terms as a senator in the Irish Free State. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923.
