The Letters of Gertrude Bell – Two Volumes – 1939
AED275
A fluent Arabic speaker, Bell travelled and lived widely around the greater Middle East in the early 20th century. She wrote numerous works on the region, including Syria, Persia and Iraq, and took part in postwar peace conferences and partition decisions. Along with T.E. Lawrence, she was a prominent voice in favour of Arab nationalism and independence following the end of the Ottoman Empire.
Her letters first appeared in 1927: this is the first printing of the Pelican paperback edition from 1939, in two complete volumes. They offer an insight into her thoughts and impression of the region, as well as on archaeology and politics.
In good condition. Minor external wear with some rubbing and creasing, but no major folds to boards. Bindings tight and square. Clean inside with no writing.
