A rare early English-language edition Gandhi’s autobiography, which covers the period of his early life up to 1921.
It was first published in Gujarati, appearing in instalments in the Navjivan journal between 1925 to 1929, before being translated and later issued as a single volume.
It describes his childhood and parents, school and family life, early travels, and his time in South Africa before returning to India. It also discusses his own spirituality, religion and way of life.
This is the second printing of the single-volume edition, published in January 1945, and one of 5,000 copies printed. Published by the Navajivan Publishing House in Ahmedabad and translated by Mahadev Desai.
Bound in hard boards with a cloth spine, with lettering to front board and spine. 640 pages. In good condition. Some spotting and wear to boards. Two previous owner’s inscriptions to front endpapers. Contents otherwise clean. No jacket.
