The Leopold Shakespeare – Two Volumes – 1883
AED1,600
An attractive and well-preserved set of Shakespeare’s plays, published in two volumes in 1883.
The Leopold was one of the first editions of Shakespeare to place the plays in chronological order, rather than by type (histories, comedies, etc), and first appeared in 1877.
Illustrated throughout in B&W wood engravings, some full-page and others in-text, depicting various characters and scenes from the plays. Includes a preface and extended introduction to the life of the author, plus a portrait.
In two volumes, hardback, bound in half green calf over green buckram boards. Raised bands to the spine, with gilt lettering against attractive red compartments.
Published by Cassell in London. Not dated, but c.1883. The same publisher issued a variety of similar printings of the Leopold edition throughout the 1880s, some in single volumes and others in two, such as this.
In very good condition. Some minor sunning to boards, and slight external wear. No writing or markings inside. Occasional spotting and foxing. 1,056 pages total across both volumes.
