Mikhail Bulgakov – The Master and Margarita – First English Edition 1967

A first English-language edition, first printing of this highly acclaimed modern Russian novel, a satire of the Stalinist system written over a decade from the late 1920s until the writer’s death in 1940.

It was first issued in a censored Russian edition in 1966-67, then published in an English translation as a single volume in 1967.

This is first printing of the first US edition of book, published by Harper and Row in New York. It features the wonderful cover design by the artist Mercer Mayer, depicting one of the central characters in the book – a gun-wielding cat.
