David Hume – The History of England – Two Volumes

A two-volume set of Hume’s monumental history of England, originally published between 1754 and 1762.

It spans a roughly 1,800-year period from the Roman invasion up to the reign of King James II in the late 17th century, and was written by Hume while he was a librarian and archivist in Edinburgh. The work went on to become highly popular and was reissued in dozens of different editions.

Hume (1711-1776) remains best known as a philosopher and essayist, through works such as A Treatise on Human Nature and An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding.

This is a later printing in two volumes. Not dated, but likely 1820s/1830s. Lacks publication credits page. Attractively rebound, probably in the 19th or early 20th-century, in quarter light-brown calf with gilt lines. Possibly part of a three-volume set with a later ‘continuation’ by Hewson Clarke, a contemporary author who added a further chapter to the work after Hume’s death. Marbled endpapers and boards. Gilt lettering to spines. In very good condition externally with only a few minor marks to the spines. Clean inside with no writing or inscriptions.
