[SOLD] The Koran – George Sale (translator) – c.1888

A handsomely-bound edition of this renowned English translation of the Quran, dating from approximately 1888, complete with fold-out maps and diagrams.

George Sale produced the first direct translation of the Quran into English, initially published in 1734. Numerous other editions were later published, using the same text. Titled in full as “The Koran: Commonly called the Alcoran of Mohammed.”

This edition was published by Frederick Warne in London in approximately 1888, with explanatory notes from the translator.  516 pages. Bound in half-calf with brown marbled front/rear boards and marbled endpapers. Appears to have been rebacked at some point with brown cloth to hinges. Gilt lettering to spine with raised gilt bands and compartments. Gilt top edge. Neat gift inscription, dated 1890, to front free endpaper, with previous owner’s bookplate. Minor spotting to early and final pages but contents overall very clean. Externally, some rubbing to boards and to edges/corners.

Features a map of Arabia, plus a larger fold-out plan and sketch of Mecca, showing the Kaaba and surrounding area. Also includes two fold-out genealogical diagrams showing family trees of Hejazi tribes.
