[SOLD] The Golden Book of Marcus Aurelius – 1899

An attractive pocket edition of the Meditations, or the Thoughts of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, a founding text of the Stoic principles of philosophy.

Divided into 12 sections, the notes were never intended for publication and outline a range of thoughts and ideas. They were titled in full as the Commentaries of the Emperor Marcus Antonius, Containing his Maxims of Science and Rules of Life.

This is a translation by Meric Casaubon from the original Greek, in which the notes were written in the 2nd century AD.

Published in April 1899 by J.M. Dent in London, part of its Temple Classics series. With a portrait of Marcus Aurelius opposite the title page, with tissue guard. Bound in soft green leather with a gilt owl decoration to front, and gilt lettering and decoration to spine.

In good condition overall, some fading and toning, especially to spine. Neat contemporary gift inscription. 227 pages.
