A superb first edition of this account of Thomas Sutton (1532-1611) one of the wealthiest private individuals in Elizabethan England, who established Charterhouse school in the early 1600s.
The site was previously a monastery and was converted into a boys’ school several years later. It relocated to its current location of Godalming in the late 19th century.
Published in 1737 by E. Owen. With an engraved frontispiece portrait of Sutton, plus a fold-out map of the buildings and site.
In very good condition. Hardback, Bound in full calf with embossed pattern to boards and a decorative spine with five raised bands and gilt lettering against a red background compartment. Bookplate to front pastedown.
