A rare first printing of this important work of Egyptology from 1875, researched and written by a leading French expert on the subject.

Paul Pierret (1836-1916) was a French archaeologist and scholar who became head of the Egyptian Antiquities section of the Louvre museum in 1873. He was subsequently named as the first head of Egyptology at the museum’s school in the 1880s.

This dictionary runs alphabetically through key figures, places, artefacts, gods and other notable items from ancient Egypt.

First edition. In French, 572 pages. Published by the Imprimerie National in Paris in 1875. Bound in half-leather with marbled brown boards and a banded spine with gilt lettering. Blue marbled front and rear endpapers.

In very good condition. Minor bumps to corners and edgewear. Bookplate pasted to front endpaper, otherwise no writing or markings inside.
