Born in Istanbul and the son of wealthy oil magnate and philanthropist Calouste Gulbenkian, Nubar Gulbenkian was educated in England and later played a role helping British spies escape from France during the Second World War. He later made his own fortune from dealmaking in the oil business in the 1950s and 1960s, and became known for his eccentricity and unconventionality. H
Gulbenkian was played by Benedict Cumberbatch in Wes Anderson’s 2025 movie The Phoenician Scheme.
First edition, first impression, published in 1965 by Simon and Schuster in New York. Hardback, no jacket, bound in grey cloth with purple design and title to front board, letting to spine, light-pink top edge. Clean inside with no writing.
