[SOLD] Nizar Qabbani – The Brunette Told Me – First Edition 1944

A very scarce first printing of the first collection of poems by the renowned Syrian poet and writer Nizar Qabbani, one of only 300 copies printed.

Then a 21-year law student, Qabbani printed the book at his own expense and shocked conservative Damascus with the daring material it contained. Despite its controversial content, the book was nonetheless approved by the Syrian authorities with the support of a family friend in the education ministry.

Qabbani went on to become one of the leading literary figures of the Arab world in the 20th century, publishing numerous volumes of poems, prose and commentary, as well as holding several diplomatic roles in the Syrian government. He died in 1998.

Printed by Al Ahad Press in Damascus in 1944. Paperback with limp card wrappers, in very good condition. Stapled binding, firm with no loose pages. Some edgewear externally but no major creases or folds. Small stain to rear cover. Clean inside with no writing or markings.
