[SOLD] Map of Modern Palestine – c.1851

A decorative and well-preserved steel engraved map of Palestine from the mid-19th century, drawn by J. Rapkin in London.

Published in the Illustrated Atlas, by John Tallis, which was issued from 1849 to 1853 and was one of the last such decorative world atlases.

The map has a decorative border and several vignettes showing Jaffa, Nazareth, a gazelle, pelicans and ‘Natives of Mount Lebanon’. The area covered extends to Saida in the north (in present-day Lebanon), Damascus to the north-east and northern Sinai to the south. Regions are demarcated by differently-coloured borders.

Hand-coloured, in very good condition.  Printed area measures 26cm x 34cm. Sold unframed.
