A first edition of this profile of the Middle East by Kermit Roosevelt (1916-2000), the grandson of Theodore Roosevelt, an American intelligence officer and diplomat.

Roosevelt was already active in the Middle East during the Second World War, and later became best-known for his role in the CIA plot to topple Iranian premier Mohamed Mossadegh in 1953.
