An early English-language edition of this existential novel by French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980).

Set over 48 hours in Paris in 1938, just before the start of the Second World War, it centres around the meaning of freedom and individual choice. The book was the first of the author’s Road to Freedom trilogy.

First published in French in 1945, this is a second printing of the first English translation, published in London in July 1947 by Hamish Hamilton.
