[SOLD] Jane Austen – Pride and Prejudice – 1894 Peacock edition, First Printing

A scarce first printing of the celebrated 1894 Peacock edition of Pride and Prejudice, published by George Allen in London.

Arguably the most desirable of any issue of Jane Austen’s romantic novel, its cover design has since become iconic and widely used on later issues of the book – as well as tote bags, notebooks and other accessories.

Illustrated with 100 wood engravings throughout by Hugh Thomson, including a frontispiece with tissue guard. This was the first issue of Pride and Prejudice to feature illustrations.

Hardback, first printing, 1894. Decorative boards and spine with gilt lettering and gilt edges to text block. Dark green endpapers. In original cloth binding with no restoration or repair work. Good/very good condition. Rubbing to bottom of front edge, where green cloth has separated slightly from front board. Extremities of spine bumped and creased, with minor bumps to corners. Fading to gilt lettering on spine, but very bright and clean front board. Light stain to rear board.

No writing, markings or bookplates inside, minimal foxing and spotting to contents, which are unusually clean.
