A seminal history of the Islamic empire in the Andalusia region of southern Spain, covering the period from the 8th to the 11th centuries.

The author was a prominent French historian whose work on Andalusia drew acclaim for its usage not only of western sources but also of primary Arabic material. The book was written and researched over several decades, with this being the revised and expanded edition, published in two volumes in 1950.

It covers the broader history of the period but also important social and cultural aspects, including architecture, religious integration, urban planning and more. Each volume has 32 full-page black-and-white photographic plates, plus several maps, sketches and a detailed index.
