It is written in an unusual narrative poem format, from the perspective of a devotee, and played a significant role in making Buddhist concepts more accessible to Western readers at a time of growing interest in the subject.
The book is divided into eight parts and covers the early life, the spiritual awakening, teachings and philosophy of Buddha. The author was an English poet and journalist who developed a deep interest and knowledge of Asia.
Illustrated with black-and-white sketches throughout, including a portrait of the author opposite the title page.
Published in 1892 by Kegan, Paul, Trench and Trubner in London. Hardback, bound in decorative cloth. Gilt edges, patterned endpapers. In fair condition. Rubbing and fading externally with some bumps to corners and crease to spine. Several previous owners’ names to front endpapers, with minor tape repair to hinge. Binding intact.
