Charles Darwin – The Origin of Species – 1888

A superb two-volume 1888 edition of Darwin’s seminal book on natural selection and evolutionary biology, one of the most influential scientific works of all time.

First published in 1859, The Origin of Species sparked fierce debate and controversy in both scientific and religious circles. It was based partly on Darwin’s own observations and findings on his various voyages, notably on the HMS Beagle in the 1830s, which helped formulate his later theories. Titled in full as “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life.”

This is a later printing (33,000) of the sixth edition, which initially appeared in 1872 and was the first to use the term ‘evolution’.

Published in 1888 by John Murray in London. Two volumes, hardback. Bound in the original light green cloth with lettering to the spines.

In very good condition. Neat contemporary owner’s name to each volume. Minor bumps to corners. Bindings tight and square on both volumes.. 365 pages (Volume 1) and 339 pages (Volume 2).
