A rare first printing of this collection of fantasy stories for children, the author’s first full-length book and written some 15 years before Dracula.
Comprises eight tales, namely Under the Sunset, The Rose Prince, The Invisible Giant, The Shadow Builder, How 7 Went Mad, Lies and Lilies, The Castle of the King, and The Wondrous Child.
With sketches and illustrations by W. Fitzgerald and W. V. Cockburn, including a full-page frontispiece with tissue guard separator.
Signed in black ink by Stoker to the title page, ‘To Major Walter’, dated 24 January 1882.
First edition, first printing, published in 1882 [1881] by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, and Rivington in London. The first edition does not include four pages of advertisements, which appear in the second edition. Hardback, in good condition. 190 pages. Beige parchment over boards. All edges gilt. Patterned endpapers. Soiling and rubbing to boards and spine, small hole to rear board. Tape repair to publication credits page and subsequent page. Bottom third of contents page missing. No previous owner’s inscriptions or bookplates. Binding good.
