Alexander Solzhenitsyn – One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich – 1963 First Edition

A first edition, first printing in English of this renowned account of life in a Stalinist Gulag.

Set in an early 1950s labour camp, the publication was a landmark event in Soviet history as it was the first time an account of Stalinist repression had been widely distributed.

This was Solzhenitsyn’s first published work. He later wrote The Gulag Archipelago, Cancer Ward and others, and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1970.

Published by Victor Gollancz in London in 1963, a year after the original Russian-language release of the book.
