A signed first printing of Albert Hourani’s classic history of the region, published in 1991, together with a signed letter from the author and several other pieces of ephemera.

Hourani (1915-1993) was a Lebanese-British historian who taught at the University of Oxford and authored a number of important works on the region in the 1950s and 1960s. He made a major contribution to modern Middle East studies and was influential on numerous other scholars and writers.

In 1991 he released A History of the Arab Peoples, an accessible introduction to the region, which became an international best-seller and his most famous work. He died two years later.

This a first edition, first printing of the book, published by Faber and Faber in London in 1991. In very good condition. Unclipped original jacket.

Signed by Albert Hourani, with an inscription, along with a signed letter to the same recipient thanking him and giving an update on book reviews, sales and other matters.

Also with two memorial leaflets from services held at Magdalen College, Oxford, in May 1993 after Hourani’s death, plus two newspaper clippings of relevance.

A rare set of pieces with significance to those interested in the history and historiography of the region.
