The Thousand Nights and a Night – Richard Burton translation – 1897 Library Edition

A complete 13-volume set of the Richard Burton translation of the Arabian Nights, titled in full as the Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night.

Published in 1897 by H.S. Nichols in London, this is the Library Edition of the work with the 13th volume comprising original illustrations. The first Burton translation appeared in 1888, in a limited-issue private edition for subscribers. The first Nichols edition, unillustrated, appeared in 1894.

Features 71 original oil painting illustrations by artist Albert Letchford, who was commissioned to produce work for the set. Edited by Leonard C. Smithers.

The set is bound in black cloth with decorative gilt covers in Arabic.

In very good condition. No previous owner’s names or bookplates, clean inside. Minor bumping to top of spines on certain volumes. Very occasional spotting but materially above average for this set.
