Susan Hillyard – Before the Oil

An uncommon first edition of this memoir by Susan Hillyard, one of the first Western women to live in Abu Dhabi around the start of the oil boom in the late 1960s.

Hillyard was encouraged by Sheikh Zayed to write the book, and notes that the manuscript was edited by Sheikh Nahayan bin Nahayan, then chancellor of Emirates University.

Hardback. In very good condition. No writing or inscriptions to contents. Fading to jacket spine and extremities of jacket cover. Small closed tear to top of jacket spine. Small residual tape mark to front endpaper.

236 pages with B&W illustrations including a frontispiece of Sheikh Shakhbout. Published by Ashridge Press in 2002.
